Basement & Crawl Space Insulation Photo Album: Ellsworth, Maine Summer Cottage Basement

Album Description

Homeowners from out of state called in Dr. Energy Saver by Keith Trembley Home Solutions recently to look at their summer cottage on the ocean in Ellsworth, Maine.  They were experiencing some musty odors and it was strong enough to be bothering them and their visiting guests.  Well, it was easy to see why.  They had a concrete crawl space under the cottage, which had a partial dirt and ledge floor.  This is pretty typical in Maine.   Every time it rained the water would come down the ledge in the yard and then into the basement, finally into the dirt floor, creating a wet humid environment.  That is just a great place for mold and insects to thrive.  You also can get dead mice, mouse feces, salamanders, creepy crawly insects, and of course mold spores.  Remember “what is under your house you breathe in upstairs”.

We thought the issue there was so serious we brought in an Air Quality testing company to do the tests. And sure enough, the tests came back with very high levels of dangerous mold spores all throughout the home.

Dr. Energy Saver by Keith Trembley Home Solutions is nationally IICRC Mold Certified, so we were able to solve the homeowner’s problem and make the home enjoyable to live in again.  We used our organic mold killer to kill the mold in the basement and on all the walls and floors.  We then removed the dead spores by Soda Blasting all the infected areas.  We prefer Soda Blasting to Ice Blasting as it has fewer problems with being affected by humidity and time of year, and we think it just plain works better (we owned and used an ice blaster for years).

Now for the best part!  Just removing the mold would not stop it from returning next spring.  So we installed our very own Dr. Energy Saver Clean Liner and floor matting material.  We completely wrapped the floor and concrete walls, and then sealed the top with a plastic cover to stop air from leaking up.  Doing this seals off all the water from the crawl space area.  After that we installed a Sani Dry dehumidifier.  We believe that almost every basement and crawl space in Maine should have a strong dehumidifier!   It improves the air quality you breathe tremendously.  Unfortunately, most small dehumidifiers you see at retail stores are just not powerful enough to do the job.

Finally, we had to decontaminate the entire living area. We cleaned all of the living areas and washed all of the clothes and linens in our very own Esporta Washing System.  This system is made especially for cleaning mold damaged clothing and all other fabrics.   Any deeply affected furniture or household item we cleaned in our ultra-sonic machine.

So it was quite a process, but in the end it is now a clean, healthy home that can be enjoyed while sitting on the deck watching the beautiful sunsets over the Blue Hill Bay!
